Glenferrie Water Management Plan

Thank you for your feedback on the Glenferrie Oval, Grace Park and LE Bray Reserve Water Management Plan. Community consultation finished on the 22nd of December. We are now reviewing the feedback from the community and will provide a summary of the feedback on this page in the new year.

Project overview

Council adopted the Glenferrie Oval, Grace Park and LE Bray Reserve Concept Masterplan in June 2009. One of the priorities for the community was the development of a sustainable water management strategy (Glenferrie Water Management Plan) for the precinct.

The Glenferrie Water Management Plan proposes to harvest and clean (treat) stormwater* through a wetland and store within underground tanks. This treated water will provide a sustainable water supply to irrigate Grace Park and Glenferrie Oval, water tennis courts, and flush toilets at the Michael Tuck Stand and the Victorian Weightlifting Centre. A refill point is proposed to allow surplus water to be collected and transported to other parks and streetscapes within Boroondara. In addition rainwater tanks will be installed to collect water from the roofs at the Michael Tuck Stand and Victorian Weightlifting Centre for use at the community gardens. The final stage of the project is to treat the water to an even higher 'drinking' standard (via a secondary treatment process) for use in the pool at the Hawthorn Aquatic and Leisure Centre. Using water within the pool would be subject to the harvested water meeting all the appropriate water quality standards and requirements for public swimming pools.

 * Stormwater is rain fall runoff from roads, roofs, footpaths and impervious paved areas.

Benefits to the community

Benefits of the proposed Glenferrie Water Management Plan include:

• an estimated water saving of 37 megalitres each year (approximately fifteen Olympic size swimming pools)
• cost savings to Council through buying less recycled water for irrigation
• a system that will not be subject to mains water price increases into the future
• greener parks, ovals and streetscapes (even during water restrictions)
• a reduction in flood risk as additional stormwater will be extracted during storm events
• excess cleaned water being returned to the Yarra River system to improve water quality
• a more resistant landscape that will be better able to cope with drought and heat waves as well as having greater biodiversity, habitat values and landscape cooling ability
• a reduced energy / carbon footprint when compared to the current practice of trucking in irrigation water during drought periods
• enhanced amenity and park experience through the creation of a wetland
• education opportunities on sustainable water management.
