Concept plan
Council has released a concept plan of an exciting project involving the Ashburton Library and the Ashburton Community Centre.
During early to mid 2011 nearly 800 people shared their ideas through workshops, surveys and meetings on what an upgraded library and community centre might look like and how additional spaces could be used.

Key features of the concept plan
Library
The existing library will remain largely intact respecting the Daryl Jackson design, facade and setbacks from High Street.
Proposed modifications include:
- larger separate children's area, external reading deck, and quiet study areas
- secure outdoor deck accessed directly from the children's area
- updated return and borrowing systems to make more use of automation
- increased staff accommodation and operations space
- shared entrance, foyer and lounge space between the library and community centre
- access to shared multipurpose rooms (Copland Room) and kitchen.
Community Centre
The existing community centre building will be replaced with a purpose-built, single level facility that will be accessed through the new shared entrance and foyer space.
The new community centre building will include:
- five separate rooms for classes, meeting and activities
- access to shared multipurpose rooms (Copland Room) and kitchen
- three outdoor areas with access from program rooms
- separate toilets, kitchenette and storage space
- reception area and manager's office
- ample storage space and access points.
Site surrounds
In addition to the construction works, other works include:
- relocating a fenced playground for young children and supervising adults
- retaining a significant tree and some natural bush vegetation
- bicycle parking at the front of the facility
- increase in onsite car parking for staff, tutors and disabled parking space
- retaining disabled parking off Munro Street to the west of the current library
- public toilets in a shared foyer accessible during normal operating hours.
Your can provide feedback via a survey from Monday 23 January to Friday 17 February, 2012.
