Urban Design Awards 2012

Mayor Cr Kreutz, Tim Hurburgh (H2o Architects) and the Patricia Cowling (Principal Genazzano) - the winners of the third category of last year's awards

The awards aim to recognise and showcase examples of good urban design and celebrate architectural quality and design excellence in Boroondara.

Following the success of our Urban Design Awards in 2011, Boroondara is proud to announce the launch of its 2012 Urban Design Awards.

Council acknowledges the critical role of good urban design in the development of our city. Boroondara is renowned for its leafy streetscapes and vibrant shopping strips. Our established residential areas are valued by residents and visitors alike, with many of our streetscapes prized for their heritage significance, leafy ambience and aesthetic appeal.  Equally important and valued are our shopping strips and activity centres. Their lively ambience and strong character give them a unique sense of place.

Unsympathetic infill development can undermine, fragment and weaken the visual unity and coherence of our streets. On the other hand, new development that respects the existing character and displays high quality architecture and design standards can further enhance their visual qualities. The Awards provide an opportunity to celebrate and recognise excellence in design and best practice development.

Award categories

2012 Awards are provided in five categories:

  • Best small-medium scale residential multi-dwelling development
  • Best heritage conservation, additions and alteration
  • Best institutional development
  • Best apartment/mixed-use development
  • Best commercial/office development.

A judging panel consisting of urban design experts and Councillors will assess the Awards nominations against a list of criteria that are well known and recognised by the urban design profession and development industry.

The nominations criteria and entry forms can be obtained from Council's Planning Counter or by downloading the Urban Design Award booklet. You can also fill in the Urban Design Awards online entry form.

Projects being nominated for the competition should have demonstrated a level of cooperation and interaction with Council, a degree of understanding and responsiveness to any issues raised by the community and Council and should have endeavoured to achieve the best outcome for the immediate streetscape and broader context.
