Improving our shopping centres

Our Shopping Centre Improvement Plan has been developed to provide a strategic approach to an ongoing program of progressive streetscape improvements to our shopping centres. This is a long-term plan and all works will be subject to Council's budget allocations on a year-by-year basis.

Forty-two shopping centres containing seven or more businesses have been assessed as part of the plan. The assessment has been based on the existing condition and the size of each centre. Camberwell Junction, Kew Junction, Glenferrie Road and Balwyn Village have not been included as improvements to these centres will be undertaken separately in accordance with their structure plan recommendations.

As part of the assessment an 'Issues and Opportunities' drawing has been prepared for each centre. This drawing will be used to inform concept design for each centre, and will be subject to further review and public consultation during this phase. Concept design will typically occur 1-3 years prior to implementation.

Improvements that will be considered include upgrading essential elements such as street trees, seats, bins, bike rails and footpaths, as well as a number of desirable additions including feature paving, additional landscaping and public art.

The Shopping Centre Improvement Plan considers streetscape and public space improvements and is not part of the draft Boroondara Activity Centres Strategy.

Implementation

Implementation of improvement works will be dependent on Council’s budget allocations on an annual basis.

We are excited that streetscape improvement works at the following centres are now complete:

Solway Shopping Centre (Karnak Road).

Hawthorn East (Tooronga road)

2010 - 2011

Consultation on the Shopping Centre Improvement Plan was undertaken in 2010. This included feedback on the Issues and Opportunities drawings for each of the shopping centres, and concept design for the first three centres - Solway (Karnak Road), Hawthorn East and Ashburton.

2012

Concept designs for streetscape improvements at Mount Street Shopping Centre have been prepared.

Concept designs for streetscape improvements at the Riversdale Road East Shopping Centre have been prepared.
