Project overview
The Camberwell Centre at 340 Camberwell Road, Camberwell will become the permanent home for the Camberwell Library.
The new Library and community meeting rooms will be located on the ground floor whilst Council office space will occupy the first and second floors. The Parkview room will remain as a multifunction space, available for Council and community use.
To improve parking opportunities in the new precinct, construction of a rear deck car park is proposed to support the expanded library floor space as well as the final Council staff relocations.
The estimated cost of the project is $20.67 million.
Based on significant research and community input, this project is being delivered in line with the Library Future Directions Strategy 2004-2014.
Project milestones and next steps
In April 2011, Council formally issued Abigroup Contractors Pty Ltd with a 'notice to proceed' with construction works.
Construction has commenced at the site and is estimated to be completed in August 2012.
Ecologically Sustainable Design (ESD)
The conversion of the former Camberwell Centre into a library is a critical sustainable design decision and through making the most of an existing Council asset, this project sets a standard in responsible resources management.
Design for the Camberwell Library & Office Project has embraced various ESD principles. Key ESD features incorporated into the final design include (but are not limited to) light wells to provide the building with natural light, solar hot water, use of green and recycled materials where possible, and rain water collection from the main roofs for irrigation and toilet flush.
Incorporation of such ESD elements will provide a significant improvement in the building’s carbon footprint and represent best practice in building design.
