Swimming pools
Pool fences are required for all swimming pools and spas that can hold more than 300mm of water.
Swimming pool and spa safety barriers
Drowning is the single most common cause of death for children under five years. Many more children are brain damaged from near-drowning experiences.
Two important measures to prevent drowning or near drowning of young children, are compliant barriers around the pool or spa and constant supervision.
It is a legal requirement that all swimming pools and spas in private residences have barriers to prevent unsupervised children gaining access.

Penalties
Those failing to comply with the legislative requirements may be liable to penalties exceeding $5,000.
Alterations and/or new barriers for a swimming pool or spa require a building permit.
Council's qualified and experienced building inspectors offer an inspection service for existing pool and spa safety barriers - and advise if your pool barrier meets the requirements - for a fee of $264.
