Population overview
We are a predominantly residential municipality located in the inner and middle rings of Melbourne’s eastern suburbs.
According to the 2006 Census, Boroondara's population on the day of the 2006 Census was 153,206 and the population for each of our suburbs was:
- Ashburton - 7,073
- Balwyn - 14,640
- Balwyn North - 19,676
- Camberwell - 20,089
- Canterbury - 7,759
- Deepdene - 1,567
- Glen Iris - 14,427
- Hawthorn - 20,117
- Hawthorn East - 12,522
- Kew - 22,554
- Kew East - 6,116
- Surrey Hills - 8,050
'Usual residence' Census population statistics (a count of those who reported that they usually live in each suburb) are also available, via the i.d website.
The ABS produces official estimates of the City of Boroondara population, calculated using the population count from the previous Census, with adjustments for temporary overseas migration, births, deaths and estimated interstate movements. The estimated population of the City (as at June 2010 is 169,507 people.
Our population is projected to increase to around 183,000 people by 2031 according to forecasts produced by i.d Consulting in 2009 (these forecasts are based largely on local residential development trends).
