Housing

Looks at housing types and tenure; real estate prices; public housing availability; and the homeless population.

We are a predominantly residential municipality located in the inner and middle rings of Melbourne’s eastern suburbs. In 2006, the City of Boroondara had 62,974 private dwellings with most being low-density houses.

Home ownership

Most Boroondara households are either home owners or are purchasing their home.

Most renters live in Hawthorn, Hawthorn East and Kew.

Social and affordable housing

Housing affordability has become a major issue, with lower income earners facing rising rents and along with the average first home buyer, have difficulties affording a home in Boroondara’s rising house market.

Social support agencies in Boroondara have identified that there is insufficient public housing and a general lack of quality, affordable housing available.

About half of Boroondara’s homeless were staying in boarding houses, a third were staying with friends or relatives, with smaller numbers staying in supported accommodation.

See Councils Housing and Homelessness page for more information on homelessness in Borooondara.
