Family and community

Provides information about people's life stage, household type, the population profile and cultural diversity.

This chapter provides information about people's life stage or specific issues to inform Council and other community stakeholders' responses to policy and to better plan for the community.

Households

Although the main household type in Boroondara is family households, around one quarter of all households are sole person households. It is expected that the number of households are expected to increase but the household size will decline.

Population profile

A substantial increase in the number of older people in Boroondara is also projected over the next 10 to 15 years. The number of people with a severe or profound disability is expected to increase with the ageing population and declining mortality rates. This will also contribute to an increase in the number of people caring for a person with a disability. The number of dependent persons in Boroondara is also expected to increase, particularly from 2011.

Approximately twenty percent of the residential population of Boroondara is aged 12 to 24 years old. Apart from residents attending educational institutions, thousands of young people outside the municipality regularly travel into Boroondara to attend work, university, or one of Boroondara's many high schools.

Cultural diversity

The percentage of people born overseas has increased slightly over the last ten years, with the most rapid growth coming from persons born in China, India and Vietnam. Most people born overseas were born in a non-English speaking country. Balwyn has the highest number of non-English speaking residents. The indigenous population in Boroondara comprises 0.1% of the total population.

Community strengthening

Indicators of community strengthening and measures of advantage show that Boroondara is a successful community. At the same time, there are areas of geographic and social disadvantage across the municipality. Overall this chapter demonstrates that Boroondara is a diverse and complex municipality.
