A local community group that champions the ongoing protection of Melbourne's iconic Yarra River has been awarded a $10,000 grant as part of Council's Living for our Future program.
The Yarra Riverkeepers Association is a not-for-profit community group that was formed in 2004 by a passionate group of locals, led by Ian Penrose.
They conduct a range of activities – including a number in conjunction with Council – with the aim of protecting and restoring the Yarra River and its tributaries.
Mayor of Boroondara, Cr Heinz Kreutz commended the Yarra Riverkeepers Association for their unflinching commitment to protecting and enhancing the Yarra River and its surrounds.
"The Yarra Riverkeepers Association shows great leadership in advocating for the ongoing health of one of Melbourne's most precious natural assets," Cr Kreutz said.
"They are a tremendous example of a community-driven whose initiative, persistence and commitment to a cause has led to a significant impact on the local environment."
