Boroondara's parks come alive to the sound of music

23 December 2011

The much-loved Summer Music Series returns in February with a spectacular array of sights and sounds.

This celebration of community and music will feature three concerts, including the annual Jazz at Canterbury Gardens and a fun-filled children’s event at Victoria Park.
In an exciting first, this year's Summer Music Series will feature an Indian cultural concert where visitors can immerse themselves in the delights of traditional (and not-so-traditional) music, dance and food presented by members of the local Indian community.

Mayor of Boroondara, Councillor Heinz Kreutz said the beloved annual concert series, now in its sixth year, gives people from Boroondara and beyond the chance to see high-quality music in picturesque settings.

"Our City is well known for its beautiful parks and gardens, and the Summer Music Series will once again see a selection of these open spaces play host to an array of melodious sounds," Cr Kreutz said.

"From jazz in the historic Canterbury Gardens to a spectacular Indian celebration at the scenic Anderson Park, there is something for everyone at this year's series.

"I am particularly looking forward to seeing the local Indian community share their vibrant and colourful culture at the Jhankar concert, which closes the Summer Music Series."

Each concert in this series is free to attend and they will be held over three consecutive Sundays in February in Canterbury Gardens, Victoria Park and Anderson Park.

So come on down, pack a picnic or visit one of the food vendors on site and enjoy the beautiful surroundings of Boroondara’s parks as they buzz with the excitement and fervour that is the Summer Music Series.

Jazz at Canterbury Gardens

Canterbury Gardens will come alive with the velvety vocals of Ali McGregor, accompanied by her vibrant three-piece band.

Ali traverses the worlds of opera and popular culture like no other, either as an award-winning principal soprano with Opera Australia or an internationally-renowned jazz and cabaret artist.

The onsite dance floor will be at your disposal as your feet start tapping to the glorious mix of classical and contemporary jazz numbers during an afternoon sure to be brimming with great music.

There will also be a drumming workshop and face painters to keep the kids entertained.

When: 4pm to 6.30pm, Sunday 5 February
Where: Canterbury Gardens, Canterbury Road, Canterbury

Kids at Victoria Park

The annual Summer Music Series kid's concert is back.

Get ready for all the laughter and excitement that Stewie Koala, Ellie Emu, Suzie Roo and their friends from the Magical Mountains will bring to this day of music, dance and inspiring activities for young ones aged from one to eight years.

As well as the concert, there will will be the chance to get up close and personal with a selection of indigenous animals when Wild Action, the travelling interactive animal show, bring out some of their furry friends including kolas and fairy penguins.

With the Tree House Art Workshop, face painters and Danny the Clown also close by, this event promises to be a great day out for the whole family.

When: 11am to 1.30pm, Sunday 12 February

Jhankar: A taste of India

Come and see Anderson Park transform into a cultural wonderland with Jhankar.

Jhankar translates to "musical chime" and the park will be positively chiming to the sounds of traditional Indian music and dance, along with contemporary Bollywood performances.

Concert goers are invited to soak up all that this fantastic afternoon will have to offer. Take part in a dance workshop, watch the kids play a traditional Indian game and get your very own temporary Henna tattoo.

Be swept away by the rhythmic melodies, colour and atmosphere of this spectacular event.

The City of Boroondara would like to thank the Rajasthan Kutumb of Victoria, who helped plan what promises to be a wonderful celebration of Indian tradition and culture.

When: 4pm to 7pm, Sunday 19 February
