Plans proceed on Hawthorn Library Precinct Project
7 August 2009
A visionary $9.85 million project to build a multi-purpose space that will accommodate services for children, families and older residents will go ahead on a site adjoining the Hawthorn Library.
The City of Boroondara has now resolved to proceed with design plans for the development of new building, having adopted a Site Development Plan in February this year.
The Concept Plan, which has already received extensive input from Council staff, key stakeholders and residents, shows the construction of a two-level building that will house:
- All children's services on the lower level
- Meeting rooms, lift and space for service functions on the lower level
- A combination of large, medium and small meeting rooms on the upper level and facilities for senior citizens and community services
- A secure outdoor play space with direct access from the playrooms
- Open space to Glenferrie Road, which will be enhanced through building setbacks
- A driveway to the north for access and parking purposes
- Connections to the existing Hawthorn Library.
The Mayor of Boroondara, Councillor Jack Wegman described the project as one of the most exciting initiatives of the next three years.
"The current buildings are tired and simply inadequate for modern community use," Cr Wegman said.
"This is a tremendous opportunity to be innovative and really deliver a landmark building that will serve current and future generations.
"People of all ages will benefit from the convenience of having family, children, aged and library services all available in the one location. As well as access, the integration of services will also create better linkages between the service providers and that will be invaluable."
Council will maximise the environmental benefits through natural light, ventilation and open space. It has also committed additional funding to achieve the equivalent of a five-star rated building, which would set a new benchmark for future Boroondara buildings.
Glenferrie Ward Councillor Phil Meggs said key stakeholders and
the community were assisting in
the delivery of this long overdue project.
"This is a critical project for us, right in the heart of
Glenferrie, and we are committed to getting it
right. There are so many factors to take into account and we will
keep talking with stakeholders on how we can best use the site to
maintain the green spaces that we know the community love and build
the facility that we know is needed."
The Hawthorn Library Precinct is at 584-590 Glenferrie Road It
currently includes a mix of services for the community including
the Hawthorn Library, Peppercorn Senior Citizens Club,
Hawthorn
Community Education Centre, Glenferrie Early Childhood Centre,
Maternal and Child Health, Occasional Care and Meals on Wheels.
