Music series all about the water
11 January 2010
This year’s Summer Music Series invites concert goers to consider water. What it means to us, its role in the community and how we see its future.
The series is staged in three of Boroondara’s exceptional parks: one featuring a landscaped seasonal river, one hiding a diverted river and one presenting the full magnificence of the Yarra.
Mayor of Boroondara, Councillor Jack Wegman said the Summer Music Series is one of the highlights of our annual calendar.
"We hope this will enable more families to come along, enjoy the atmosphere and musical celebration while escaping the heat of the day," Cr Wegman said.
"Regulars to our Summer Music Series will note some changes to this year's events. After receiving community feedback, the concert series will now be held on three consecutive Saturday evenings.
"So pack a rug and a picnic basket, and join us to experience a joyous musical interpretation of these sites."
All events are free entry. Food stalls onsite on site at all concerts. And think about public transport before you go - it might save time and the environment.
Jazz at Canterbury Gardens
5pm - 8pm, Saturday 6 February, Canterbury Road, Canterbury
Featuring: Society Syncopators and Melbourne Tramways Band
Join us at this much loved annual event in Canterbury’s beautiful heritage gardens.
Sit back and enjoy the Society Syncopators, perform in the rotunda or walk the wonderful Art Deco bridge that once spanned a small river. Diverted underground, the river now joins a system of barrelled waterways running beneath Boroondara.
Also featured this year is the fabulous Melbourne Tramways Band, a long-time resident of Boroondara - dance floor on site.
Kids at Fairview Park

Featuring: Skippy, and Fifi and the Flowertots
Hey kids! Do you love water? Do you love gardening and looking after the environment? Ever dreamt of venturing into Fifi’s magical garden with Bumble?
Come and meet Fifi and the Flowertots on the beautiful shady banks of the Yarra River. Skippy will also be on hand to teach us about conservation and the unique Australian environment - as only Skippy can.
Musical Extravaganza at South Surrey Park
5pm - 7pm, Sunday 20 February, Verdun Street, Surrey Hills
Featuring: Ros Bandt and Camberwell Chorale
Renown for her work inspired by water, contemporary composer Ros Bandt will create a musical montage of sound at the picturesque South Surrey Park.
Inspired by a collection of stories, poetry and reflections from local residents around the theme of water, Bandt will present an exploration of sound featuring custom made instruments rarely seen.
Much loved local municipal choir Camberwell Chorale will also feature at this rare event. A concert sure to challenge the boundaries of music and capture the imagination.
