Hawthorn Town Hall closes on a high note
10 February 2012
Renowned local composer George Dreyfus is set to perform the final concert at the Hawthorn Town Hall before it is temporarily closed for redevelopment.
Held on Sunday 4 March, Dreyfus will mark the occasion by premiering his Symphony No. 3, a musical journey that will feature community musicians and local choir, Camberwell Chorale.
Dreyfus has accomplished much in his long and distinguished career, with achievements ranging from scoring a top-10 hit with his theme from Rush in 1974, to being awarded the Order of Australia in 1992.
Glenferrie Ward Councillor Phil Meggs said George Dreyfus' performance will provide a fitting finale for the current Hawthorn Town Hall before it is closed for an exciting redevelopment.
"The City of Boroondara has been a supporter of George Dreyfus and his work for quite a number of years now, and it is fantastic to see that our relationship with him continues to grow," Cr Meggs said.
"A composer of very high distinction who has performed at a number of Council events, we eagerly anticipate what George has in store for the Hawthorn Town Hall audience with his premiere of Symphony No. 3."
"I look forward to seeing the historic Town Hall host many more talented performers when it reopens in 2013 as a premier arts and cultural space."
The renowned Australian composer's performance will be split into halves. The first half will revisit some of Dreyfus’ most famous compositions including the much-loved theme from Rush and a series of short pieces composed for Tim Burtstall’s 1963 ABC children’s television series, The Adventures of Sebastian the Fox.
The second half will showcase his brand new composition, Symphony No. 3.
The Hawthorn Town Hall will officially close after the Camberwell Rotary Art Show in April and is expected to reopen in mid-2013.
