Drive safely around schools
31 January 2012
School's back for the year, which means increased traffic congestion around Boroondara's 59 schools.
Mayor of Boroondara, Councillor Heinz Kreutz said the best way to reduce the risk of accidents is to remain vigilant while driving around schools during morning and afternoon peak periods.
"With primary and secondary schools back, there is going to be a great deal more activity and traffic congestion in the mornings and afternoons," Cr Kreutz said.
"It is important that drivers and pedestrians remain vigilant while making their way to and from school, and respect the road rules and parking restrictions.
"By adhering to the road rules, we can go a long way to ensuring a safe passage for all."
One way to reduce congestion is to park a few streets away and walk to and from school. Even better, consider walking, riding or scooting all the way to school instead of driving.
Not only do these sustainable alternatives help the environment and alleviate traffic by taking a car off the road, but it is also great for our general health.
Parents or guardians can also use this time to teach children about road safety – where to cross safely, using pedestrian crossings and watching out for cars leaving driveways – and be a good role model.
Whenever you walk or ride with your children you'll be improving their skills and confidence to be safe around roads.
