Boroondara trials new technology to free up more parking space

10 February 2012

The City of Boroondara will start trialling innovative vehicle detection technology to manage time-restricted street parking more effectively without chalking tyres.

The three-month trial will start in the third week of February. It will be conducted in off-street car parks located in Butler Street, Camberwell, Princess Street, Kew and in Auburn Village, Hawthorn East.

Sensors will be installed under the bitumen in the parking bays, which records the time a vehicle arrives. They are linked to hand-held devices carried by parking officers, who are alerted when a vehicle has been in a parking bay longer than the time limit.

Mayor of Boroondara, Councillor Heinz Kreutz hopes the trial will lead to a fairer and more consistent turnover of parking spaces in time-restricted bays surrounding Boroondara's shopping precincts.

"Council is trialling the new sensor technology in an attempt to give shoppers and traders more certainty when it comes to parking in and around Boroondara's popular shopping strips," Cr Kreutz said.

"Local traders will also benefit from this trial as more parking spaces become available more often and this will allow more customers to visit their businesses."

The electronic system will also analyse parking trends, occupancy and turnover, which can be used to better inform Council's future planning.

This vehicle detection technology has been successfully adopted by several councils including the cities of Melbourne, Manningham and Moonee Valley.
