About the Boroondara Literary Awards

Founded in 1999, the Boroondara Literary Awards is a partnership between the Rotary Club of Balwyn and the City of Boroondara.

The awards offer the chance to receive cash prizes in two sections. A prize pool of over $9,000 is available across various age groups in the Young Writers section, with almost $4,500 available in the Open Short Story section.

Winning entries will be published in the annual anthology Word You Up.

Entry Categories

Open Short Story Competition

A national open themed short story competition that is open to any Australian resident

Word Length: 1500 to 3000 words.

Prizes

  • 1st place: $1500
  • 2nd place: $1000
  • 3rd place: $500 
  • Highly Commended (four places available) $50

Keith Carroll Award

  • $500 prize to the best entry from a Boroondara resident.

Young Writers Competition

Junior

Open to young people in school year levels 5 and 6 who live or study in the City of Boroondara.

Prose length between 300 and 500 words.

Poetry Length less than 100 lines.

Prizes

  • Prose 1st place: $150, 2nd place: $100, 3rd place: $50
  • Poetry 1st place: $150, 2nd place: $100, 3rd place: $50

Middle

Open to young people in school year levels 7, 8 and 9 who live, work or study in the City of Boroondara.

Prose length between 500 and 900 words

Poetry length must be less than 200 lines

Prizes

  • Prose 1st place: $600, 2nd place: $400, 3rd place: $200
  • Poetry 1st place: $600, 2nd place: $400, 3rd place: $200

Senior

Open to young people in school year levels 10, 11 and 12 who live, work or study in the City of Boroondara. Also open to young people not in secondary school aged 15 to 18 years old as of 1 January 2015.

Prose length between 900 and 1300 words

Poetry length must be less than 200 lines

Prizes

  • Prose 1st place: $600, 2nd place: $400, 3rd place: $200
  • Poetry 1st place: $600, 2nd place: $400, 3rd place: $200

Entry is free! All entries must be submitted online at the links below

Remember to:

  • number and title each page
  • stay within the word limit
  • keep a copy of your entry 
  • do not include your name and address anywhere on your entry document.

Winners will be announced in November 2015.

Terms and Conditions of Entry

  1. Entries must be received by 5pm Friday 28 August 2015.
  2. Entries must be the original, previously unpublished work of the entrant. 
  3. Authors may enter a maximum of two pieces in this category.
  4. Past prize-winning works in the Boroondara Literary Awards may not be resubmitted. 
  5. Any story that does not adhere to the word limit is ineligible. 
  6. All entrants must reside in Australia. 
  7. The City of Boroondara and the Rotary Club of Balwyn reserve the right to retain and publish copies of the winning entries in the Literary Awards annual compilation anthology, and/or on the internet. 
  8. Any story that includes strong language or adult themes may not be included in the anthology. Copyright remains with the author. 
  9. The judges reserve the right not to award a prize in a category if they deem no entry is of sufficient merit to warrant the prize. 
  10. The judges' decision will be final. No correspondence will be entered into. 
  11. Employees of the City of Boroondara, Leader Newspapers and members of the Rotary Club of Balwyn, as well as members of their immediate families, are not eligible to enter the competition.
  12. Failure to meet any of the conditions will render entries ineligible. 
  13. All entries will be accepted at the discretion of the Awards Committee which will exercise its judgement in ruling on questions of eligibility. The ruling of the Committee on questions of eligibility is final, and no further correspondence will be entered into.

Winning entries in print

Each year an anthology of winning entries is published. Winning entries have the chance to be featured in the 2015 Boroondara Literary Awards Anthology.

Copies of the 2014 anthology, Word you up, are available for purchase or to borrow from the Boroondara Library Service.

Entrants that win or are highly commended receive a complimentary anthology of all winning entries and judges’ comments.
