Council encourages responsible pet ownership.
The Domestic (Feral and Nuisance) Animals Act 1994 gives local councils the power to control dogs and cats living within their boundaries. The Act covers:
- Animal welfare
- The responsible ownership of dogs and cats; and
- The protection of the environment
If a person breaches the Domestic (Feral and Nuisance) Animals Act 1994, an infringement notice may be issued to the animal owner. Penalties vary depending on the nature of the offence.

Animal Registration
It is legally compulsory for all dogs and cats over the age of three months to be registered with Council. All animal registrations renewals must be paid to Council by the 10th April each year. Failure to register an animal carries a penalty of $226.
